I started with a boring, thrifted jean jumper dress and turned it into a fiery little tunic top. With just a little sewing skill (easy enough for a beginner) and the ability to follow the directions on a box of Rit dye, you can turn your boring clothes into something fun.

Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Go thrifting or closet surfing. Find a boring dress that has a basically good fit, or you can take in the side seams. Make sure the fabric will take dye — natural fibers such as cotton, rayon, silk, etc. are best.
Step 2
Dye your dress according to the directions on the Rit box. I used the bucket method.
Step 3
Cut the bottom of the dress off to desired top length. I wanted a tunic length top, so I chopped off about 15 inches. Make sure to leave a seam allowance. Keep the bottom of the dress. You’ll need that fabric later.
Step 4
Turn up the hemline about 1/2 inch. Press. Turn up hemline again. Press. Sew in place.
Step 5
From the leftover bottom of the dress, make a sash/belt. Cut two strips that are 4 inches wide. Sew the two strips into one long strip that will wrap around your waist twice. (If you don’t have enough fabric, just wrap once.)
Step 6
Fold strip in half, right sides together, so that it makes a very long narrow strip. Sew together, leaving an opening for turning. Turn. Press. Topstitch, securing the opening as you go.
Step 7
Rock your new look!
