Giveaway: Emergency Plan for your Pets

emergency plan

Do you have a emergency plan for your pets?  For many people, pets are an integral member of the family; however, when disaster strikes pets are often left out of the emergency preparedness plan.

As you design your plan, here are a few steps to keep in mind to make sure your beloved pets are taken care of:

1.  Create a pet survival kit along with your emergency preparedness kit can include:

  • Pet food
  • Vet records
  • Can opener
  • Cat litter/pans (if applicable)
  • Medications (if applicable)

2.  Keep your pet’s identification tags up to date and securely fastened to their collar. In case you are separated, your pet’s locator will know exactly whom to contact

3.  Make sure to choose an alternate location within your emergency preparedness plan that allows pets.  Keep in mind that many emergency shelters are unable to accept pets due to public health reasons

If you’re ever concerned about including your pet in your emergency preparedness plan and need advice, contact your local animal shelter or animal control office.

Great post! To be honest, we didn’t really think about this when preparing our emergency supplies. We frequently run out of dog food and have to run out to the store because we didn’t realize we were running out soon. I’ll definitely have to change all of that, especially since we live in hurricane country.

A lot of people also now microchip their pets, so it’s important to have the microchip number in your supplies.
Thanks for a great post, and a reminder about our pets!

Didn’t think about this. It definitely falls lower on the priority list thought (behind family). Still, it’s always nice to be prepared!

Thanks for a timely reminder. We deal with hurricanes here and it’s important to consider pets in our emergency plans.

Great post! When we lived on the coast, we evacuated for hurricanes to hotels that accepted pets. Since we’ve moved, I haven’t made a pet kit/plan.

BTW, our new Min Pin is named Toby! =)

What a great post! I would just die if anything happened and I wasn’t prepared for my dogs. They are like my children. Thank you SO much for this. I never even thought to add dog food and vet info to my emergency kits.

    I’ll be doing that asap.

I do have my dogs micro chipped and we have a stickers on our windows that says we have two dogs in case of an emergency and we are not home.

What a great giveaway. If I win I will promise to put it towards my dogs emergency kits!

We don’t have pets, but another helpful tip I have heard was to always leave the pet’s leash near the door so that if you have to leave in a hurry you will know where it is.

Thanks for the tip! We have pets who are our family we could never abandon them, they would have to go where we go, or we wouldn’t go so it’s SO important to prepare!

I have an emergency plan for my pets and they have a backpack by the back door that we can grab on the way out if needed. Our dogs are larger and it was a challenge to find a place we can take them, but I have everything as lined up as I can.

Here are some other things you may want to consider adding to your pet’s survival kit:

    1. Dishes for their food and water;
    2. Bedding; and
    3. Favorite toy.

I think tossing a tennis ball in there for your dog would be a great stress reliever or both you and your dog.

I’ve been working on our emergency preparedness, and even though it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, a gift certificate would go a long way!

For most of us if we look around the house we already have what we need for our emergency kits we just need to put them together into a container ready to go should the need arise for us to evacuate – think in terms of the nesting dolls a large kit for a week which are the supplies if there was a reason you couldn’t leave your property for a week (big snow storm for example) then a mid size kit that would be a smaller scale if your family had to actually leave the property for several days which you can grab & toss into the car or carry out the door & then smaller kits that stay in the car, at work or in a purse… just take a day & go through the house to gather your supplies & you will find out that you do not need to “panic” you are actually part way there & only need to get a few extra items when you follow the advice given in this series on emergency preparedness
