What are the three critical steps to create a emergency preparedness plan for your household in case of emergency?
September is National Preparedness Month and I’ll be joining The Clorox Company and Consumer Queen, along with several other bloggers, to spread the word about emergency preparedness.
Disasters can happen quickly and unexpectedly. The most important step to staying safe is being prepared BEFORE an emergency occurs.
Emergency Preparedness Plan
When designing your emergency preparedness plan, you can implement the following three easy steps:
- Purchase or build an emergency preparedness kit – Your kit should house enough supplies to last your household a minimum of three days for evacuations and 2 weeks for emergencies at home. Next week, I’ll offer specific tips on building a disaster kit with your family.
- Make an emergency preparedness plan – Schedule a meeting in your household to discuss what to do in case you are separated during an emergency. Choose two places to meet – one right outside the house and the other outside your neighborhood. Be sure to practice and review the plan twice a year!
- Get educated – Get to know the types of disasters (e.g. hurricanes, floods or forest fires) prevalent in your area so that you can better tailor both your kit and plan. Find out how local officials will contact residents of your city to advise of important safety information. AND, get first aid training. Learn critical techniques like CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

Prepare Yourself Now for Peace of Mind Later
Households should create or purchase an emergency preparedness kit with enough supplies for everyone to last three days for evacuations and two weeks for emergencies at home. Include things like: water, non-perishable food, flashlight, radio, first aid kit, a multi-purpose tool, important medications and copies of personal documents. You may also include household liquid bleach such as Clorox for cleaning and disinfecting and emergency water sanitation.

Thank you for raising awareness on this. As always, TJ is a great resource!! We have a family fire plan, but this made me think that we need a tornado plan as well.
It has been several years since I have even thought about our family emergency plan! I need to pull out the old “stock-pile” and update it. Also, never thought about having a second place to meet OUTSIDE the neighborhood – great tip! Thanks for the reminder and for offering such a great giveaway!!!

Great timing! I’ve been working on our emergency preparedness lately. Any ideas for gluten free dairy free non perishable food items to include in our kit?
We have been working on our emergency preparedness and have quite a bit of food storage built up, we still need to make up our individual kits.
That’s funny – I’m actually writing one of these at work right now. Guess I should do one for home too!!
I need to work on building a plan and a kit. We don’t live in a area near hurricanes, but have snow storms and tornadoes. I am not sure about the earthquake possibility.
Thanks for this reminder. We also create small bags to grab at a moment’s notice with a change of clothes and shoes, a few necessity items, and so on.
Thanks for the reminder!
Good call! Such a good reminder for this mom!
It definitely gives you peace of mind to be prepared! Thanks for the reminder!
We just recently had a funnel cloud super close to our home and it really made me panic because I would not have been prepared if it had touched down and were in an emergency situation! This would help out! How great of you to share this!
definitely needed, I experienced an earthquake abroad a few years ago and realized how important it was.
This is great, me neighborhood is currently working on preparedness, making a plan and creating block captains. Thanks for the post.
This is a great idea!
emergency prepardness is so important! glad you’re getting the word out.
Great post, Laurie!
Wishing you a happy happy Thursday. xx

Our kit is in the works. We have all the food part ready its the 72 hour kit I have a hard time with. I don’t usually think of things like toilet paper, extra clothes for everyone, sleeping bags, etc.. I need to get it finished, thanks for the reminder!
I have half a kit made, this $25 would push me into finishing, lol.

Great giveaway and good reminder to get going on this!
We need to update our emergency kits because they were “perfect” for when our kids were 2 and 6–they’re now 10 and 6 and we live in a different state with totally different disasters to worry about. Thanks for the reminder and the give away.
Great reminder, thank you. My dad is a fireman so we’ve always talked about these things, but it’s never too often to have a reminder. I need to double check that hubby knows where our 2 giant “emergency” duffel bags are, now that I think of it.
Thanks for the giveaway, good luck to everyone!
I belong to the Salvation Army and so getting this out there is very important. People always think it could never happen to them, but being prepared is so important for safety, health, and peace of mind. One of the schools in my area has each child bring a little survival bag. They are to include things like granola bars, flashlight, family photo, etc. What a great thing to teach our children to be prepared even when away from their home.
It is awesome to have this giveaway now with tomorrow being 9/11. Thank You for the chance to enter. I tweeted it as well.
This is very timely information with the anniversary of 9/11 being tomorrow.
new to tip junkie and love it-thanks
Sure could use this towards starting my family a preparedness kit!
Thanks for the giveaway!
A good reminder for all of us because you never know what can and will happen.
Thanks for providing the info. I am in the process of putting our kit together and can use all the help I can get.
Yes ma’am…we live here in Florida and always get our supplies ready for hurricane season…but it’s also important to have that emergency kit on hand for all year long! I also keep all my prized possessions, pics of the kids, etc. in one place, and a big plastic container to put them in…if there is ever an emergency and I have the time to grab these things, I will!!!!
we live in earthquake country & still do not have our kit fully finished.
Thank you for this reminder, I have been meaning to create one for our household. I look forward to your next postings to learn more about what to include in my kit and how to store it.
I’m so happy to see this posted! I’ve been a loyal personal fan for ages, and this was a great resource to pass on to my community!
I have been meaning to get to this but still haven’t made a real effort. Thanks for giving me the little push I need.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! for providing this list. I’ve been working on my items for a wihle now. A gift card would allow me to complete our kit.
I have been without power here twice this year already. We have moved into a farmhouse from the city. I freak out every time we lose power. 20 minutes in the city and we are back on and good to go…here we went for 23 hours or more. I think the one thing I would add is a cooking/heating source for your food. We had flashlights, candles, kerosene lanterns, food, water for drinking and toilet but nothing ready to cook with. Maybe camping stove with propane tanks left in the garage or even the grill with gas left in the garage so when the snow flies we can use it. Thanks for the reminders and maybe next time we go without power, I won’t be such a drama queen!

The gas explosion in the Bay Area served as a great reminder to copy all the essential documents you would need if you had to start your lives over again: Documents that prove ownership, documents you need to file claims, documents you need to locate accounts, documents to preserve financial information and all personal and family records (birth and marriage certificates, social security, etc).It is also wise to photograph your home and its contents. Put copies in a safe deposit box, or send to a trusted friend. Copy to a disk or flashdrive to save paper.
this is a good idea……………we had a power outage today and had to fumble around for candles…THANKS

We had two power outages today, and winter is not far behind, here in Alaska. I am working on my family emergency prepardness plan this week!
I’ve been working (slowly) :/ on getting 72 hour kits done for my family! My goal is to have them done by the end of this year. Your tips each week will be very helpful. Thank you!
I had a desire to start my firm, but I did not earn enough amount of money to do that. Thank God my close fellow said to take the loans. Therefore I used the short term loan and realized my old dream.
