I’ve had a couple requests for Blog Etiquette hereby known as Blogtiquette. Not that I’m an expert – just looking out, as usual.
#1. Give credit where credit is due. If you saw a post, meme, idea, etc. that you love and want to recreate on your blog – go ahead. Just be sure to give link love to the person you blogjacked it from.
#2. Do not attack people with negative anonymous comments. If you’re going to disagree with someone own up to it by linking your name otherwise don’t comment at all. Leaving negative comments anonymously is a cowardly thing to do.
Obviously, you’re not going to agree with every post you read by every blogger – but allow others their opinion. It’s their blog and they can post what they want to.
The purpose of comments in general are to continue the conversation, give encouragement, or thank the person for their hyperlink or thoughts.
#3. Capitalize, punctuate, and start new paragraphs. It’s difficult to read blogs that are a single run on sentence. FYI: ALL CAPS IS LIKE SHOUTING.
I know you’re intrigued, so here are other Blogtiquette opinions:
The Original Mud Puppy has some good ones I hadn’t thought about:
Rule #1 – Don’t blog about something that will get you fired, or cause you to lose a relationship. Unless, of course, you’re fine with losing said job or relationship.
Rule #5 – Don’t be long winded. At least too often. There are times when it’s alright to expound a bit. But let that be the exception, not the rule.
Stupid Church People has some great ones:
1. Each blog you visit is the Internet “home” of someone. You wouldn’t dare walk into a home and run your mouth at the host. It’s inappropriate to do on blogs as well. It’s just ugly and you end up looking stupid. Don’t do it. It’s immature.
4. …When I’m considering posting I ask “Is what I’m about to say going to add value to the conversation?” My “opinion” sometimes means NOTHING to the core of the author’s post. Therefore I keep my golden brain to myself no matter how great I think I may be at the time.
Rocks in my Dryer, a truly fab gal, posted the question and these are just a sample of comments from her readers:
* Do respond to people that comment on your blog. It lets them know you are interested in their opinions and encourages repeat visits.
* Do think twice or thrice before you delete inappropriate comments from your blog. Some of your best conversation will come from controversy.
Celia, who was one of the hosts of Blogapalooza I attended, posted her thoughts on the subject last month. She’s the one who had picture of the Queen picking her nose. I knew I saw it somewhere. Here are a couple of her thoughts:
1. Try to avoid comparing your life with other people’s lives.
2. Introduce yourself when you are commenting for the first time.
4. If you read a lot of blogs, allow yourself to feel blogligated to no one. {{my personal fav}}
Be sure to click on each link and read their entire post – they’re entertaining! I hope this clears up some questions and starts some good dialogue.

Very good blog rules / blogtiquette.
i think that if you want to have a good life you should be nice to to people if you want to have people be nice to you?
♡ Those are some good ideas!

Wowza. Thanks for the linkage. I’m not worthy….
Excellent! Thanks!
Great post. I am going to put a link on mine for others to see.
I think you should always comment if you are reading a personal/family blog to let them know you are reading/interesting in what they have to say. It only takes a second!
I have never thought about responding to people who have commented on my blog. This was good to read. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
Very good tips! I think I need to work on some of these. Thanks!!
You know I agree with all of these, but one. Responding to bloggers to show them you are interested in what they have to say. I tried so hard to be a good responder but totally lost interest because so many people have there account set up that you can’t respond to there comments. I like the idea, but it sure doesn’t seem to work for me!
I am new to the blogging world and had no idea in regards to blogging etiquette. What a great idea to share what you know. I have a lot of changes to make. lol
I just have to say I absolutely love Tip Junky! Thanks for all the great tips.
this is a great collection of blogtiquette guidelines!! i absolutely LOVE the symbolism of “walking into someone’s home.”
Love the blog and thanks for the link as well!
Hi, there, I’m Chica. I came across your blog on widgetbox just a few days ago and I posted your widget on my site. I love your blog!
These are great tips. Thanks for sharing them with us!
These are really great tips, thanks for sharing them. It is great to continue to learn new things and your site does just that.
Excellent advice. I love the mini-headers for other people’s blogs.
I need to introduce myself. I’ve definitely never done that in comments before, so that’s a good tip for me. I am a new blogger (lit and laundry) and I found you through today’s post over at Seven Clown Circus.
The other one I need to think about is thinking twice before deleting evil comments because they may contribute to a conversation. I got a doozy today from Ms. Anonymous. I’m still thinking about it. I think I would post it if it weren’t anonymous.
Great tips! I found you through a post by Are You Serious! linking back to you regarding this post. I’ve never thought about introducing myself when I first start commenting – I’ll have to start doing that.
BTW – hello, my name is Yvette
You could have titled this one,
“Emily Posts”.
Thanks for sharing some valuable info.

Great advice! This should be mandatory reading for any blog hopper!
Hello,
I found your link listed in http://j-a-girl.blogspot.com/
favorite column.
I too have added your site to mine.
I was wondering how you make it say “like this idea” instead of “comment” at the bottom?
I think I am going to like this site.

Some of those were hilarious! I {LOVE} the one about not leaving anonymous comments especially!

hi, my name is kim. i just found your blog a few weeks ago. i’m loving it! love all the advice that you gave. i think it’s a good reminder for all of to have once in awhile. the one i need to work on is my always writing in lower case!
Great tips! I am here by way of 7 clown circus but I am sure I have stopped by before. The title of your post is the same as the one I posted yesterday. I look forward to reading more of your tips!
Oh tips, I love them. I feel so ignorant. I have just started my blog and need to learn everything…. right now!!!
How did I not know of this beautiful site before.. I feel so left out.
Thanks for sharing the Blogtiquette. I especially liked the part about walking in to someone’s home as that is how I feel about my blog – it is an extension of me so therefore I consider it my “home” on the internet.
What a great tip post!!!
I have a question on blog etiquette that you didn’t address -
When someone leaves you a comment, especially one that requires an answer or acknowledgment – to you comment/answer on YOUR blog, or do you go to their blog to comment/answer their comment?
Love your site!! I added your button to mine!!

From a fellow blog ‘addict’ I have to say that you have a wonderful site!I’ve found so many helpful tips! I can’t believe how much content is in your blog- you’ve put so much work into it, and it not only looks amazing, but it also has some of the best content I’ve ever seen on a blog!
With all these tips, I’ve decided to ‘model’ my blog after yours, in design and content. It will never measure up, but you give great bloggers inspiration, which is hard to find these days!
Really, thanks again, and I wish you all the best
xoxo- ms

Thank you so much! I think this is a definite must read post! I absolutely LOVE your site!!
I understand the things that i just read and agree with them.
A lot of great tips here. I’ve just started blogging and thus far I am enjoying myself thoroughly. I know I have a lot to learn and with posts like these I know I’ll get there.
Thanks!
this is just great, Sometimes when I come to a blog If it is insteresting to me, i read 2 or 3 posts, share love with a coment, and if it is extremely good for my interest I become a follower. I totally agree that a blog is “someones home” so everybody has to show respect to that door. Tks so much for sharing this tips.

All people deserve very good life time and business loans or financial loan can make it better. Because people’s freedom bases on money state.
I love your tips and have been going from one post to another reading your advice on blogs. And now I will probably violate some of the etiquette tips above. I didn’t like having to read comments from spammers when going down reading all the comments to this post. It makes me less likely to read the comments on your blog in the future – but I will, of course, still read your blog.
These are all fantastic tips…we should all know these things already, but you know what they say, “Common sense is not so common.”
I don’t agree with not sharing my opinion. I think that’s what it’s all about. People provide insight from different perspectives. It allows growth and adds tot he conversation. You should be respectful about it, though. Just saying “I disagree” doesn’t add to the conversation. But saying “I disagree” and adding why – allows another perspective. If there was only one perspective the world would be boring. I also believe that if you post your opinion online, you should expect someone to disagree. If all your commenters agree, to me, that’s a problem.
I am definitely one who replies to people who comment on my blog… I LOVE the interaction, that is WHY I blog.
I HATE when people don’t leave me a way to communicate with them. PLEASE leave me your email address so I can reply to you… I even say that above my comment form in bold letters.
I always leave my name, email and blog address with every comment, even negative ones and I try to be polite in those also because as was said, it is the bloggers internet home. You can disagree without bing disagreeable.
What a great post, thanks so much for sharing these, I hope all bloggers read this. =)
great tips, Love #1
