Easy Maxi Dress Tutorial-Using a Tank Top!
Just a Tip!
Difficulty: For Beginners
Budget: Cheap
Estimated Time: Under 30 minutes

You Will Need...

  • Tank Top
  • 1 1/2-2 yards of fabric
  • Elastic Thread
  • Regular Thread
  • Sewing Machine

Instructions

# 1
tanktop

Begin by cutting your tank top where you would like the skirt material to begin.

# 2
sew

Next you are going to wrap the material that you've chosen around your body 1 1/2 times (wrap around your chest, not your waist). This will give you the width you need. In order to get the length, measure from where you you cut off the tank top to where you want the dress to end (I did mine so that it ended at the top of my feet). Add 2 inches to this number and that is how long you will need to cut your fabric.

Once you've cut your fabric, you will fold it in half, front to front, and sew up the long side so that you have a giant rectangle with one seam.

Up until this point you have used regular thread. For the next step you will remove your regular thread from your bobbin and replace it with elastic thread. Wind the elastic thread around your bobbin manually and re-insert it into your machine. Once your elastic thread is on your bobbin, place it in your machine and then sew a straight line across the top of your skirt, the part that is going to attach to your tank top. Once you've sewn your line your material will crinkle up as in the picture below. Then you are going to flip your tank top inside out and pin your skirt to the tank top. (Make sure your materials are front to front) Also make sure the seam of your skirt is in the center of the back of the tank top. Pin this first and then work your way around the tank top, pinning and pleating so that the material becomes equal in width to the tank top.

Once yo're done pinning, sew the two pieces together, still using the elastic thread in your bobbin. The elastic thread is important because if you didn't have it your dress wouldn't fit over your shoulders...assuming your shoulders are wider than your waist that is...which I'm pretty sure is the case for most of us. Once you've sewn the skirt and top portion together, flip your dress inside out. This is what it should look like:

Finally, hem the bottom of the dress by folding over by about 1/2 an inch and then folding it over again another 1/2 inch. This way you don't see any of the frayed edge of the material. It helpful to use an iron to do this so that you get a clean, crisp line. I paired my dress with a large belt and the outfit was complete!
